American Express Membership Rewards® is the most valuable transferable points currency in Canada.
With so many great cards that earn Amex Membership Rewards® points, you can end up with more than one account.
You can transfer your Membership Rewards® to more airline and hotel partners than any other credit card points program in Canada.
Combining them helps you get the most value when you transfer.
Plus, if you ever cancel a card, you’ll keep your Membership Rewards® as long as one card stays open. Combining helps ensure you don’t lose any points.
Once you combine your accounts, Membership Rewards® you earn from your American Express® Platinum, Gold, Cobalt, Green, Business Gold and Business Platinum will all accumulate into one place.
Here’s how to combine your American Express Membership Rewards® between your accounts.
Why Combine Your Amex MR®
You’ll earn points on almost every purchase with Amex® cards that earn Membership Rewards®.
Many Canadians carry more than one, like the American Express Platinum® for travel benefits and the American Express Cobalt® for grocery and dining.
Each Amex MR® card earns you plenty of Membership Rewards®, but those points can sit in separate accounts. Combining them makes transfers to partners easier.
Partners require a minimum of 1,000 points in 1,000-point increments. So having one account makes transfers simpler and keeps smaller balances useful.
Combining also helps if you choose to close a card. Your points stay safe as long as you keep at least one Membership Rewards® card open.
The no-fee American Express Green® Card is a practical way to keep your points without paying an annual fee.

How to Combine Your Amex MR®
Once you combine your American Express Membership Rewards® accounts, the points you already have and any you earn from any Membership Rewards® cards will accumulate in a single account.
Getting set up is easy:
You can combine business and personal Membership Rewards® accounts. For example, points from the Business Platinum® and Business Gold® can be combined with your Amex Membership Rewards® from personal cards.
The higher-tier card becomes the main account for your points, in this order: Platinum®, Gold®, Cobalt®, and Green® last.
AWP TIP
Keep in mind that combining your accounts will reset your welcome bonus tracker.
You’ll want to do it before you start spending toward a bonus, or wait until after you’ve earned it.

How to Combine Amex MR® with Others
Unfortunately, you can’t combine your Amex Membership Rewards® with anyone else, not even a spouse.
You also can’t transfer your points into someone else’s airline or hotel loyalty program account.
What you can do is transfer your Membership Rewards® points to your own loyalty accounts, and then book flights or hotels for your family and friends.
The one exception is with authorized users. You can transfer Membership Rewards® points to their loyalty account, as long as they’ve been authorized users on your Amex® card for at least 90 days.
With a little planning, you can add a spouse or family member as an authorized user and later move points into their account.
It’s even more rewarding if you add them during a promotion, since you’ll earn bonus points at the same time.
When my husband and I plan trips, I sometimes transfer my Membership Rewards® points into my Aeroplan® account and book both our flights. On other trips, we transfer his points and book from his Aeroplan® instead.
We just use whichever balance makes sense at the time, along with Aeroplan® co-branded cards like the TD Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* and TD Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Privilege*. For benefits like free bags, priority boarding, and lounge access.
Bottom Line
American Express Membership Rewards® are the most valuable transferable points in Canada.
With plenty of cards and ways to earn, combining all your Membership Rewards® into one account makes it easier to get the most from your points.
The process of combining points between your Amex accounts is easy. Hopefully, this guide is a useful resource of how you can combine your Amex® points.
